How To Submit your Film

So you want to submit a film, here's how to do it:

  • Make sure your film is 10 minutes or less.
  • Save your movie in Apple TV 2 format in favorite media encoder
  • Put that file on a usb thumb drive and show up at 5 pm on the day of the event.

We recommend using iTunes to encode your video, and here is a short tutorial on how to get it done:

The State of the Flix

This last year has brought a lot of changes to lives of Team Attack of the Flix – careers, schedules, and in August my daughter Elise was born. These changes leave us with less time on our hands to do the unseen and unnoticed leg work involved in maintaining Attack of the Flix.

Changes to Attack of the Flix
After some lengthy discussions we have settled on some compromises that work for the team the we believe will keep the spirit of the night in place.

  • Podcast - while we enjoyed doing the podcast it’s been difficult to schedule and find time to do a regular release, so we are discontinuing it.
  • Microflix - anything else branded Microflix will be discontinued so we  can focus on maintaining and promoting Attack of the Flix
  • Livestream - this has never pulled in the additional viewers that we were hoping for, given that it adds a layer of technical complexity we have decided to drop it.

New Submission / Show Time
This change has been the source of a lively debate among the AofT team and our filmmakers on facebook.  We believe full heartedly that this will be a good change. It should help the event be less work for the team while still being an open, uncensored, free event for Portland filmmakers. Here are the details on the new showtime.

  • Submissions at 5pm
  • Show plays at 6pm
  • The show is capped at 60 minutes
  • Prizes and winners at 7:00pm to 7:30pm
  • Out by 7:30pm

Curious will then be hosting a comedy open mic, beginning just after the Attack is finished.  This puts our event in-line with the rest of the theater’s schedule.

We  believe that short movies make great entertainment as dinner theater.  We believe that the potential for cross pollination between the performers from the comedy open mic and the filmmakers from AofT could be adventurous.  And we are confidant that the audience that will come early to the comedy open mic will be respectful to us.

Best Of  - The Top 15
Twice a year we will be doing the Best of AotF.  This will include the top 3 entries from the 5 preceding nights.  The Best Of will be in January and July.

Thank you, Curious Comedy!
I want to make it clear that Stacy, the Artistic Director of Curious Comedy, has been very supportive of our event and was an advocate for keeping the night.  Also, Greg, the theater’s Event Organizer and Bar Manager speaks very highly of the community that attends the event.  We have proven over the last couple of years to be not only respectful of the films but also of the space and the staff. It is because of all of you that the theater has been so happy to keep AofT and not charge us to use the space.

And Finally...
Please remember, the main focus of our event has always been to provide a respectful space for filmmakers to show their projects to one another and to a larger community.  That focus will not change, we are simply rolling off some of the extra efforts we have experimented with over the years, and leaving the original focus.

No Show October, Regular Transmissions Resume in November

We were asked at the beginning of this month by the very gracious Curious Comedy staff if they could use our time slot for this month for a very awesome comedy show, All Jane No Dick Comedy Festival.  Seeing that AotF would not be possible without the fantastic resources of Curious Comedy as well as their amazing staff, we were more than happy to oblige!

Screen Shot 2012-10-06 at 10.29.06 AM.png

We will be returning for a regular broadcast in November.  Stay tuned and keep making movies!

Renaming the Facebook Group

Hey Flixers, we're going through some changes here at AotF.  One of the things we're doing is simplifying our process of advertising and setup for the night.  A part of that process is dropping the MicroFlix name and focusing on Attack of the Flix.

You'll notice that the FB group has changed from "Microflix Film Makers" to "AotF Film Makers".

More changes to come!
